- Your last tape deck by Michael Goncalves
- Your last tape deck
- Remember that scene in Zorba the Greek where the old hooker died and the whole town looted the dead woman's place? Well, if ZORBA had any sense about him, he woulda left the parrot and taken her NAK DR3 (Hey, so what if Zorba the Greek was shot in 1964 and the DR3 came out in 1994---don't 'wizz' on my analogy for the sake of accuracy!!!). FOLKS, this is YOUR LAST TAPE DECK.
- This is your remaining TOUCHSTONE to your past. This is the device you can proudly point to and explain "Remember that article on iNEWS that showed the caveman they dug out of the icepack? That was me. I was walking to Tower Records with this under my arm when I got caught in a blizzard...Why do I fawn and sign over my 'BABY NAK'? 1. Its the build quality, stupid!!! This is a 2 headed deck that has the specs of a 3 headed deck (the third head was for monitoring what you were recording---which you really didn't need). 2. NAK made three decks, the Pappa Deck (DR1) the Momma Deck (DR2) and the Baby Deck (DR3). They used 80% of the parts of a DR1 to build the DR3 so NAK l-o-s-t money on each DR3 they built. This means you got 80% of a $1,200 dollar deck for a lousy $495.00 retail. 80% of a Tape Deck is the transport mechanism---if it is off even slightly, the recording will be ruined. I collected about 100 tapes of 80's college radio that I preserved on my BABY NAK---these tapes are priceless because they hold cool sounding bits of songs that I am still searching for (like dinosaur droppings). They are so precise that you could swear you are listening to a CD or MP3 recording!!! Find one on the internet? BUY IT---someday, it will be worth big money (like a 1915 Electric Victrolla). Suggestions? a.) Take it to a pro and have the BIAS professionally scoped and set. In order to secure the sale on my Energy EPS 150 sub woofer, the salesman told me to bring in my DR3 and the tech would scope and set the Bias Tune. He did and it runs perfect in all modes. Yes, you can 'dick' with the knob but why? Without a scope, you'd be doing by ear and that doesn't cut it. Second Suggestion? Stock up on Maxel UDXL II 90 minute tapes before they disappear (Type II). Metal tape sounds too shrill and Type one should only be used to tape animal noises or your girlfriend cheating on you---it's not considered HIGH FIDELITY!!! And don't get TDK tape, get Maxel. Why? The coating on TDK scrapes off too easily and will sound dull and lifeless after the 11th play. Always be cleaning your old SENDUST tape heads and regularly DEMAG the heads. As you explain to the younguns "This primative Nazi Technology left tape residue and magnetism every time you popped in a cassette and played it. Why do I LOVE NAKS? NAK never ATE a tape of mine after thousands of plays. Remember, this is ANCIENT TECHNOLOGY!!! Like a French Cave man painting. The best of the best NAK Dragon can not even come close to today's AIFF at 128kb 16 bit word lenghts download which can not come close to a good LP on 180 gram vinyl (LP=400kb per channel). Use the deck to breath life into your old 1960s-Y2K cassettes. Cassettes? Remember them? A Reel to Reel recording in your pocket?!!!
